In 1984 contaminated supplies of F8 – a vital compound that can prevent haemophiliacs bleeding to death – were given to sufferers and as many as 2,000 people were infected.
Just prior to this, scientists discovered that heat-treating F8 would kill the Aids virus but it proved an expensive process to maintain. It was believed that between December ‘84 and April ‘85 some health authorities did not use the heat-treated supplies of F8.
